Researchers to Ask Elders About Herbal Remedies

First Nations elders in La Ronge and English River are being asked to share their knowledge and expertise this summer.

A group of scientists from the University of Saskatchewan is studying the effects of traditional Aboriginal medicine on cardiovascular disease, and recently received permission from band officials to meet with local elders over the coming months.

Dr. Rui Wang of the U of S says herbal medicine is largely unknown to the scientific community and that needs to change.

Wang says Aboriginal medicine is taught only through oral tradition and that’s one of the reasons why they need to visit the elders in person.
