The National Centre for First Nations Governance has released a report detailing best practices being used by First Nations communities.

The centre is based in British Columbia, but takes examples from bands throughout Canada and the U.S.

The report describes how some bands use certain economic techniques to gain freedom from government and stride towards self-determination.

Edward Allen, co-author of the report, says he hopes First Nations can use this information to improve conditions on their reserves.

“The purpose of the material is to provide information and examples of communities that are taking steps and can provide guidance to other communities that want to do it. So it’s tailored to the indigenous experience,” Allen says.

The report holds up the White Bear First Nation’s foray into gaming, back in the early 1990s, as just one example of how bands can take financial matters into their own hands.
