Report Confirms Toxicity Of Flin Flon’s Soil

A recent study confirms that soil in the Flin Flon-Creighton area is, in fact, toxic.
Last year, the Manitoba government found much of the communities’ soil exceeded standard guidelines for human health in levels of mercury, arsenic and lead.
Dr. James Irvine, the medical health officer for three northern Saskatchewan health authorities, says there’s no reason for the public to panic.
Irvine says “the risks are likely low”, but adds the levels of toxins were high enough that governments and health officials wanted a more thorough assessment of the risks to humans.
There are currently more studies happening to clarify the extent of the contamination.
In the meantime, Irvine says people should take precautions while in the area, and make sure they wash their hands if they come into contact with the soil.
