The Sakawewak Storytellers Festival kicked off last night in Regina with one of many traditional Aboriginal performances slated to run this week in the city.

Event spokesman Floyd Favel says the festival features a number of traditional Aboriginal performers from all over Canada — including traditional storytellers, singers, dancers, and musicians.

According to Favel, one of the highlights of the week-long event will be a traditional Michif panel featuring older Michif speakers. He says it will give Regina residents a rare opportunity to hear the Michif language, including translation.

The festival is scheduled to wrap up on Saturday evening.
