Red Earth Reserve Braces For Flooding

The chief and council of the Red Earth First Nation are in meetings today discussing the threat of flooding that is predicted to hit the community by the end of the week.

Saskatchewan Watershed Authority spokesman Doug Johnson says the Carrot River is expected to peak this weekend because of a combination of the very wet 2005 fall moisture conditions, above-normal winter precipitation, the prospects of a quick thaw and some rain forecasted over the next 24 hours.

Johnson says because the Red Earth reserve is directly situated along the banks of the Carrot River, several reserve houses located on the river’s banks may be flooded.

Johnson predicts the water should remain high on the reserve for at least a week after it crests this weekend.

The watershed authority has also issued a flood advisory for several other northeastern grainbelt communities, including Nipawin, Tisdale and Hudson Bay.
