Residents of Red Earth could be back in their homes by Wednesday night.

The band’s emergency coordinator, Roy Head, says flood waters are receding and the worst appears to be over.

Water has entered 21 homes on the reserve, but flood officials say that was a result of groundwater leakage into basements — not overland flooding.

Head adds the First Nation’s drinking water is tested every day, and is OK right now. He says the continued safety of the drinking water will be the main factor in determining when to give the all-clear for residents to return.

Head also points out the band’s chief is certain he wants to see the people coming back by Wednesday.
