An assistant principal with the high school in La Loche says he’s pleased by this year’s anticipated graduation rate.

Stephen King says 34 students are expected to cross the graduation floor this year — a new record.

Last year’s total was in the low 20s.

King credits hard work by the students for the accomplishment, but notes new job opportunities in the area may also be contributing to the success.

Northern Alberta’s oil sands continue to draw workers from La Loche. Locals are also being hired to upgrade the Sakatchewan portion of the new road link to Fort McMurray and to help a company search for oil north of La Loche.
