Last week’s Back to Batoche Days festival is being called the best in over a decade.
More than 15,000 people participated in the Métis celebrations — a new record.
Last year’s event drew roughly 10,000 people.
Métis Nation of Saskatchewan President Robert Doucette calls it a huge success, and says several elders commented that it was the best edition of the festival that they had ever attended.
Doucette also says the Metis will stage a year-long community celebration of their identity and survival as a people next year, to coincide with the 125th anniversary of the Battle of Batoche.
He says 2010 will be the “Year of the Metis” in Saskatchewan.
