The RCMP continue to probe the death of a 19-year-old man in Beauval.

Kyle Martin Lariviere’s body was found on a snowmobile trail near the community on Sunday afternoon.

Authorities say he was picked up around 4 a.m. Saturday after the Mounties received word of an intoxicated person in Canoe Lake.

RCMP spokesperson Sergeant Carole Raymond says he got away from the arresting officer after he was driven over to the Beauval detachment.

It was there that Lariviere, who wasn’t handcuffed, got out of the vehicle while the officer went in to unlock the door.

Raymond says there are no firm policies on how officers are supposed to handle that situation.

The RCMP’s major crimes unit out of Saskatoon has been called in to investigate.

The Mounties are calling it an “in-custody death”, so they’ve also asked the provincial government to appoint an independent observer of the investigation.

The RCMP is being criticized by the mayor of Beauval over its handling of Lariviere’s death.

Alex Maurice says the Mounties should have notified someone in the community the young man had disappeared.

Maurice says the local search and rescue team or fire brigade could have assisted officers in locating the man, before it was too late.
