The Shellbrook RCMP are confirming the 81-year-old elder killed on the Mistawasis reserve a couple of nights ago was the victim of a stabbing.

Family members inside a residence heard Antoine Sand yell from the front steps and saw him fall to the ground, but didn’t who stabbed him.

Corporal Barry Thomas says he died from multiple stab wounds, but it isn’t clear how many assailants were involved.

Thomas is requesting more help from the public to help the Mounties track down whoever is responsible for Sand’s death. However, he is grateful for the tips that have been pouring in.

Sand’s grandson is awaiting trial after being implicated in the murders of two other Mistawasis men last year.

Thomas acknowledges investigators are looking into the possibility Sand’s death was a revenge killing — but notes they haven’t seen anything yet that confirms that sort of speculation.
