Mounties have recovered the wreckage of a downed helicopter in the far north.

Yesterday afternoon, divers from the RCMP’s Underwater Recovery Team found the craft in about 25 meters of water at Bernick Lake.

Two men were found inside the wreckage. They have been identified as 50 year-old Quebec resident Joseph Michael Plourde and 56 year-old Neil Husband of Ontario.

Sergeant Brad Kaeding says a helicopter will have to be used to get the wreckage out of the water because the area is so remote and there are no access roads of any kind to the lake.

He adds the two victims of the crash have yet to be freed from the wreckage but that will happen eventually.

Kaeding says the file will now be turned over to the Transportation Safety Board.
