RCMP Concerned With Aboriginal Seat Belt Usage

The RCMP in Saskatchewan say they are disappointed with the number of unbelted people who died on provincial roadways during a recent seat belt enforcement campaign.

According to the Mounties, 22 people who weren’t wearing seatbelts died in accidents from April 1st to June 30th — representing 63% of all highway fatalities during this period.

The RCMP also say they find it “very alarming” that 77% of the unbelted accident victims were of First Nations ancestry.

RCMP spokesman Insp. Don Ross says this is a situation that needs to be addressed quickly, and the force has been in contact with the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations to try to find a solution.
