Northern Saskatchewan is losing a well-known radio personality.

Tom Roberts — the long-time broadcaster of CBC Radio’s Keewatin Country — is preparing for a departure.

The corporation announced yesterday that the show is being cancelled and its La Ronge bureau closed in the face of cutbacks.

Roberts is originally from Stanley Mission and started broadcasting northern news in 1974.

He has been with CBC in La Ronge since 1984.

It’s not known when he will host his last show.

Residents of northern Manitoba are also losing their CBC presence with the removal of the bureau in Thompson.
