The North’s medical officer of health is hoping the next edition of the Canada Food Guide will have a little more to say about traditional foods common to northern Aboriginal people.

The food guide is currently in the process of being updated, and Dr. James Irvine feels it’s a golden opportunity to provide more information about a traditional diet.

Irvine says considering how rampant diabetes is in northern Aboriginal populations, the inclusion of the merits of a traditional diet in the food guide could be very helpful.

The current edition of the Canada Food Guide was released in 1992.

The review will be carried out over the next 2 years.
