Public Still Cares About Native Issues: Layton

Federal NDP leader Jack Layton feels there’s a lot more public sympathy for the plight of Aboriginal Canadians than what is conveyed by the media.
Layton says he was “appalled” when the Tory government decided to oppose the UN’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples last year.
That decision didn’t appear to have any impact on the Conservatives’ showing in the opinion polls.
However, Layton says it would be wrong to suggest mainstream Canadians are apathetic toward Aboriginal issues.
He says there are citizens across the country who were just as dismayed as he was when the Tories decided to oppose the UN declaration.
Layton says the Conservatives don’t seem to respect First Nations and Metis people, and he believes that troubles a lot more Canadians than some people might think.
