Public Review of Midwest Project Underway

The government is getting out its microscope to inspect a proposal from a mining company that wants to expand a northern operation.

Recently, Areva notified both the province and Ottawa it wants to extend mining and milling activities near McClean Lake.

The Midwest Uranium Mine Development was first approved in the 1990s. However, that was when the proposal simply called for the work to happen underground.

Malcolm Ross of Saskatchewan Environment says the company now wants to start an open pit operation.

That has prompted an environmental review from the two levels of government.

Ross says the review period lasts from now until January 5th.

Written submissions from the public will be considered.
