Provincial Government Attacked Over Land Use Plan

An Alberta-based scientist says he sees huge flaws with a provincial government land use plan for northern Saskatchewan.
Dr. Kevin Timmoney recently compared Saskatchewan Environment’s North-Central Land Use Plan to one compiled by an ecological group.
Timmoney says the department’s plan is short-sighted and doesn’t contain enough measures to protect the environment.
He says it features a “let’s go out and harvest as much wood as we can in the shortest possible time” approach, “without any real thought” on protecting the local ecosystem or the future economic potential of the region.
On the other hand, Timmoney says the Usky Puhco Plan is safer and more sustainable for the future.
It received a score of 2.4 out of of a possible score of 3, while the government plan scored just 0.6.
Timmoney’s research was done on behalf of the Saskatchewan chapter of the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society.
