The province is buying two million seedlings for the renewal of Saskatchewan forests.

Saskatchewan Environment spokesman Shane Vermette says the program is designed re-forest the “backlog, not-sufficiently regenerated areas” of the Pasqua-Porcupine forest near Hudson Bay and the Island forest around Prince Albert.

Vermette says there is a lot of work involved surrounding the purchase of the seedlings, including contract work from northern Saskatchewan.

Vermette says prior to the current forest management agreement, it was the province’s responsibility to re-forest those areas. The total cost to purchase the seedlings is $950,000.
