The Saskatchewan Government is opening its wallet in an attempt to get a historical artifact back in First Nation’s hands.

The government is awarding $60,000 to the Saskatchewan Heritage Foundation to support a bid to purchase a drawing by Chief Pasqua.

The pictograph was created around the time of the signing of Treaty 4 in the late 1800’s.

Minister responsible Glen Hagel says the drawing is an important illustration of how settlers and first nations struck their agreement.

Hagel adds the money will help the Pasqua band and the File Hills Qu’Appelle Tribal Council buy back the pictograph from an American art dealer.
