For the second time in as many months, the provincial government has agreed to help fund the paving of a reserve access road.

The province plans to spend $1.6 million to pave 7 km of the Witchekan Lake Access Road to Highway 24.

The work will start in the 2007 construction season and take a year to complete.

Chief Ken Thomas welcomes the provincial contribution — noting there are times during the year when the access road is impassable and dangerous.

Thomas says a paved road will bring about greater economic development and tourism opportunities for his band – plus, it will allow for easier access for ambulance services into the community.

Last month, the province announced $2.5 million in funding for improvements to the Big River First Nation’s access road.
