The provincial government is extending the length of time First Nations and Metis groups can give feedback about a proposed mine in the Fort a la Corne area.

A senior official with the Environment ministry says anyone who wants to submit information for possible inclusion in the environmental impact assessment now has until Sept. 17 to do so.

For the past few years, Shore Gold has been working towards establishing a commercial operation in the Fort a la Corne region.

The company hopes to someday harvest diamonds from the region.

Malcolm Ross is with the environmental assessment branch of the Ministry of Environment.

He says the province extended the deadline because to ensure that all Aboriginal groups in the area have a chance to voice their concerns.

“We had some concerns expressed from groups who would not be able to meet that guideline, that submission date, and we wanted to ensure that all groups had the opportunity to submit, because it is an important component of the process,” Ross says.

Ross says based upon the comments that are submitted, the ministry will prepare project-specific guidelines to assist Shore Gold with the preparation of the Environmental impact statement.
