Proposed MRI Could Test First Nations’ Sovereignty

A political scientist says the possible construction of an MRI clinic on a Saskatchewan reserve could have big implications for both First Nations’ sovereignty.

Ray Davie teaches at the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technology in Prince Albert.

He says if the Muskeg Lake Cree Nation is successful in establishing the clinic, it would mark an important milestone in the debate over how far sovereignty on an Indian reserve actually goes.

He adds the move, which could include a fee-for-service scenario, might also alter how health care is delivered in our province.

Premier Lorne Calvert has, so far, remained cool to the proposal.
