Cameco is mulling over the possibility of expanding its Rabbit Lake operation.

The company and Areva have informed the Nuclear Safety Commission it would like to begin hauling uranium-rich solution from McClean Lake to Rabbit Lake for final processing.

The companies are also asking for approval to build a 16-kilometre road that would be used exclusively for that purpose.

Cameco spokesman Lyle Krahn says the move would allow his company to extend the life of the Rabbit Lake mine while streamlining operations.

Krahn says the companies will be seeking public input as they draft an environmental impact assessment.
