Progress Made In Clean-Up At Welcome Bay

A spokesperson for the Hatchet Lake First Nation says last week’s diesel spill in Wollaston Lake is under control.

Mary Denechezhe says government crews and a private contractor did a lot of work over the past few days to soak the fuel off the lake surface.

However, she cautions a lot of detailed labour still needs to be done, and no one is sure how the spill will impact the environment.

Denechezhe adds the band’s state of emergency has now been lifted and things are relatively back to normal.

She says boats are being allowed to operate in the bay, and the barge is functional, as well.

However, they are asking children to stay away from the shoreline until it has been fully cleaned.
