A broad consultation Elections Canada is conducting in northern Saskatchewan about new voter ID requirements is well underway.

The issue came to a head in the March by-election in Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River, with reports of severals voters being turned away at polling stations because they didn’t have the proper ID.

The Liberals and NDP say it affected their voter base the most.

Elections Canada spokesperson Diane Benson says her agency wants to hear from candidates, elections officials, community service providers and others to see if there’s anything it can do to address any challenges voters faced.

Benson notes Canada’s chief electoral officer does have the right to expand the list of eligible pieces of ID.

Elections Canada officials are in La Ronge today and tomorrow as part of their information-gathering exercise.
