The City of Prince Albert has begun taking benches out of the downtown areas.

Officials behind the move say it is intended to discourage loitering.

However, Ruth Gillingham of the Prince Albert Youth Activity Centre says she’s not sure whether the idea is good or bad.

She also says she isn’t sure if the action addresses the underlying issues behind the problem such as drug addiction and homelessness.

Gillingham says she’d like to see a shelter constructed for the homeless that would enable them to begin living independently and ultimately get back on their feet.
