Prince Albert Approves Youth Detox Centre

Prince Albert City Council has approved a bylaw amendment that will pave the way for the construction of a youth detox centre.

The 15-bed voluntary youth treatment centre will be managed by the Prince Albert Grand Council, with the help of the local health region.

Initial plans to establish the centre in nearby communities had been met with resistance, but last night, city council gave the project the green light.

It will be built next to the Victoria Hospital and will replace an interim six-bed voluntary residential treatment centre at Pine View Terrace.

Prince Albert’s acceptance of the project comes after both Birch Hills and the RM of Buckland decided against having the facility built in their jurisdictions.

Prince Albert mayor Jim Scarrow notes, unlike those communities, Prince Albert has no qualms about treating at-risk youth for drug problems.

Scarrow adds he was very pleased to see the motion at last night’s council meeting pass unanimously.
