Primrose Projects On Hold Until Elders Get Cheques

The vice-president of the Primrose Lake Economic Development Corporation says decisions still have to be made on how to use much of the $19.5-million settlement awarded to the communities of Beauval, Ile-a-la-Crosse, Jans Bay and Cole Bay.
Calvin Maurice says individual payouts are well underway to elders who were displaced when the government created the Primrose Lake Air Weapons Range several decades ago.
However, the bulk of the money has been earmarked for economic development projects for the four communities.
Maurice says those decisions will be made once all the eligible elders, or the spouses of deceased elders, have received their cheques.
He believes that should be complete by next year at the latest.
Maurice isn’t sure how many elders have received money so far, but says each elder that qualifies for the settlement receives $10,000.
