First Nations leaders from Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba are meeting in Saskatoon today to talk about housing issues.

About 300 people are expected to attend the “Our Homes…Our Future” symposium to discuss topics like black mould, asbestos and owning a home.

Lac La Roche Indian Band chief Harry Cook is one of the moderators.

He says one of the projects his band is working on is to provide a way for young people to essentially buy and own homes on reserve.

Cook hopes the project will get off the ground in November.

Cook points out that his band uses up to 70 per cent of its federal funding for education, and he feels there is not enough set aside for housing needs.
