Potential Of Non-Timber Forest Products Studied

The Saskatchewan Forest Centre has released a report calling attention to the province’s non-timber forest products.

The paper looks at 12 different species of mushrooms and plants that aren’t receiving a lot of attention from business.

Forest centre CEO Robin Woodward says more research needs to happen before the impact of harvesting the plants is known.

But he suspects there are many opportunities smaller operators in the foresty business could be exploring.

While much of the harvesting would be labour-intensive, he says it’s worth noting that not much mechanical or capital investment would be required to take advantage of these opportunities.

Woodward says one thing that would need to be put in place is a way of monitoring how each species responds to being harvested.

GeoSpatial Consulting has been recruited to look into the issue.
