Political Unrest In Poundmaker

A sit-in is taking place today at the band office on the Poundmaker First Nation.

Eric Tootoosis, the person leading the demonstration, says the move is being made in an attempt to force a new election.

Tootoosis says many band members are unhappy with how last year’s vote was handled, and they are also worried about the band’s financial direction.

He says appeals to chief and council have been largely ignored.

Tootoosis says his group has contacted Indian Affairs to voice their concerns, but hasn’t received a lot of backing.

The protest was scheduled to commence at 1:00 this afternoon.
