A First Nations man who escaped from custody at the Melfort courthouse a few weeks ago has been apprehended in Saskatoon.

23-year-old Levi Waldbillig was wearing handcuffs when he bolted from his RCMP escort August 7th while being moved from the courthouse with a number of other prisoners.

He had just been sentenced to nine months in jail for theft of a vehicle and other theft-related offences.

Waldbillig remained at large until Saskatoon police spotted him at a city residence late last week while investigating an unrelated matter.

He now faces an additional charge of escaping lawful custody, and will make his next court appearance in Melfort next Tuesday.
