A walk is being planned to honour an Aboriginal political pioneer from northern Saskatchewan.

The late Lawrence Yew was the first Aboriginal politician to be elected to the Saskatchewan legislature when he represented the north from 1982 to 1986.

NDP MLA Buckley Belanger and Canoe Lake band councillor Maurice Iron plan to lead a 40-kilometre walk from Beauval to Canoe Lake at the end of the month.

Belanger says they want to raise money to build a memorial at Yew’s gravesite in Canoe Lake.

Belanger also says in addition to raising funds for the memorial, he and Iron have decided the walk should also raise money and awareness for young northern athletes.

Yew passed away in 1998.
