Political leaders, resource users and average citizens from across northern Saskatchewan are in Pelican Narrows this weekend for the latest edition of the River Gathering.

They will get a chance to speak directly to government types about common concerns in the North — including high unemployment and the dwindling number of traditional land users.

Event spokesman Darren Deschambault expects there will also be plenty of discussion about the residential schools and the loss of Aboriginal languages.

Deschambault says the people’s task will be to come up with recommendations — the rest is up to government and industry.

Organizers expect 500 people to take part in this weekend’s gathering.

FSIN Chief Lawrence Joseph and Northern Affairs Minister Joan Beatty are among the dignitaries that will be making appearances.
