Pelican Narrows Demonstration Ends

Protesters that have been occupying the band office in Pelican Narrows for the last week have decided to end their protest.

They left the Peter Ballantyne administration building early Saturday, after being served with a court injunction on Friday ordering them to leave.

The protesters left without incident, but an RCMP officer was injured when the court order was served to the dissidents Friday night.

There are reports the officer lost a finger after getting it caught in a door that was slammed shut, but the RCMP will only say that the officer suffered a hand injury.

RCMP spokesman Corporal Brian Jones says it remains to be determined if charges are warranted.

The sit-in of the band office in Pelican Narrows began last Sunday.

The protesters were unhappy with the way a tax rebate settlement from the provincial government was being distributed by the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nations’ chief and council.
