The Peepeekisis First Nation has a new member on their council.

Evelyn Poitras has won a by-election for headperson on council.

Poitras recieved 157 votes, while opponents Sharon Brabant and Lori Racette-Desnomie received 98 and 48 votes respectively.

Poitras was the spokesperson for a treaty rights protection group who went to federal court in an attempt to remove Chief Beverly Bellegarde.

Bellegarde has since been re-instated to her position as chief, after the court’s ruling that the council of elders didn’t have the authority to remove her.

The by-election was held when the former headperson resigned.
