PBCN To Emerge From Third Party Management

After about seven years under third party management, the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation will soon be able to have partial control over its finances.

The band will enter into a co-management partnership April 1st, following years of planning to help cut into a deficit and establishing effective checks and balances.

Indian Affairs spokesman Trevor Sutter says this is a big accomplishment for the First Nation.

Sutter says the band has a solid plan in place for debt retirement, and the political will to follow through on that plan.

He also says it shouldn’t be too long before the band is allowed to have complete control of its own finances.

Sutter notes the department much prefers having First Nations manage their own affairs, rather than having to intervene.

There will be eight First Nations under third party management in Saskatchewan once PBCN is taken off the list.
