The provincial government has awarded a five-year timber allocation to the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation.
This morning in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan Environment Minister David Forbes presented Peter Ballatyne Chief Ron Michel with a term supply licence for the band’s forest company — Meetoos Forest Products.
The licence allows the company to harvest roughly 200-thousand cubic metres of wood in each of the next five years from a large area of forest north of Creighton.
Harvesting will begin following Saskatchewan Environment’s approval of a five-year operating plan, which is still being developed.
The company’s operations to date have been based on annual permits issued by the department.
It’s expected the increased security of timber supply will help the company in its search for potential industry partners.
