The Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation is in the process of establishing a reserve 50 kilometres south of La Ronge along Highway 2.

The band has already bought a parcel of land near the Besnard Lake turnoff, and hopes to eventually turn it into reserve land with some homes and a business — likely a gas bar.

Chief Ron Michel says the location is a key junction in the North that connects the west side with the northeast, and hopes the band can capitalize on that traffic.

Michel says the wheels are already in motion to have the business and homes in place sometime this summer.

The land was bought using the band’s treaty land entitlement money.
