The chief of the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation says he wants to commit more resources to help troubled youth in one of the band’s communities.

Harold Linklater says he is aware serious problems, including drug and alcohol abuse, are plaguing some young people in Sandy Bay.

Five residents have taken their own lives in the last few months, and 12 more have attempted suicide.

Linklater says he knows more resources will be needed to help the youth there make healthy lifestyle choices, and he’s ready to assist local leaders in that regard.
