The chief of the Prince Albert Grand Council is speaking out against the provincial government’s proposed additional hours legislation.

Gary Merasty says the idea to force employers to offer any additional work hours to part-timers is cumbersome, and will cut into many businesses’ bottom line.

Merasty says many First Nations youth in Prince Albert are just getting their first taste of employment in the city, but could be canned if the employer can’t award them hours.

The chief says First Nations’ businesses in Prince Albert will feel the pinch, especially in the hospitality sector.

Merasty says the province is heading into a skilled labour shortage and this new legislation will only make things worse.
