Overdue Caribou Survey In The Works

An official with the Beverly and Qamanirjuaq Caribou Management Board says work is underway to launch a survey of the animals next year.

However, Dr. Ross Thompson says the group will likely only attempt to study the Beverly herd, as time and money are in short supply.

Up until now, the board has worked with data collected from the last survey done in 1994.

Thompson says that simply can’t continue.

Among other things the survey would identify cow-calf ratios, groupings and population depth.

Thompson says the group needs to work on funding first before conducting the survey, which he hopes will take place next June.
