Ottawa Provides Update On Boarding School Issue

The federal government is indicating it will make a decision on the boarding school in Ile-a-la-Crosse before the end of January.
Survivors of the school have been pressing the government to include it in the residential school compensation settlement.
It wasn’t among the schools added to the agreement last month.
But in a letter to local Metis leader Don Favel, the government says it still needs to assess the available research — and will make a call on this file within 60 days.
Favel is remaining optimistic the research that has been gathered will be enough to change the government’s mind on this issue.
He says, in addition to archival information supplied by the regional Roman Catholic archdiocese, some new research has been uncovered in archives in Saskatoon that also supports the survivors’ cause.
