Two well-known Aboriginal war veterans from Saskatchewan have been chosen to receive special recognition from the federal government.
Howard Anderson of Punnichy and Claude Petit of Saskatoon are among six veterans that will be awarded the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation.
Anderson served in the Second World War and is a former president of the Saskatchewan First Nations Veterans Association.
Petit served in the Korean War and was wounded in action. He helped establish the National Aboriginal Veterans Association and eventually became its president.
Both Petit and Anderson have been outspoken critics of how the government has handled the issue of compensating Aboriginal veterans for post-war benefits they were denied.
