His father is a travelling evangelist, his brother and his cousin are both former chiefs of the Key First Nation, but Corey O’Soup feels he’s found his own calling as a neighbourhood activist — and that’s what’s led him into provincial politics.

The Sask Party has picked O’Soup as their nominee for the upcoming by-election in Riversdale, left vacant by former NDP premier Lorne Calvert’s retirement last week.

He says he got into community work — and from there, into provincial politics — because he felt that residents of his neighbourhood haven’t been well-served by having such high-profile MLAs as Calvert and former premier Roy Romanow.

“In the last 15 to 20 years, the constituency has been represented by the premiers of the province, and sometimes I feel like they’ve almost forgotten about their constituency while running the province. I mean, running the province is a big job, but you still have to take care of your own backyard,” O’Soup says.

O’Soup says if he’s elected as an MLA, his focus will remain on improving Riversdale, and addressing the inner-city issues he knows so well.

The NDP have yet to name a candidate for the riding.
