A representative of an independent oversight committee for a new Metis Nation of Saskatchewan election says steps have been taken to ensure this weekend’s assemblies go smoothly.

Ron Lemabbe says registration begins Friday night at the Travelodge Hotel in Saskatoon.

Metis local presidents will be convening Saturday morning for a Metis Nation Legislative Assembly to approve proposed changes to the MNS Constitution. A general assembly of Metis citizens will be held later that afternoon to ratify the changes.

Lemabbe stresses the only issue to be discussed Saturday morning is electoral reform.

He says local presidents will be required to bring a copy of their minutes and a list of their members to the meeting. They will also be forced to swear before a commissioner of oaths that they hold their office legitimately.

Lemabbe says most local presidents he’s talked to support the process that’s been laid out.

He says most of the presidents in the province have been contacted by the oversight committee, and most support the electoral reform that’s been laid out.
