The Onion Lake First Nation received a cheque for $50,000 today for winning an SGI seatbelt wearing challenge.

The money is to be used to improve road safety in the area.

The Onion Lake, Sweetgrass and Thunderchild First Nations challenged each other.

The idea was to see which reserve could achieve the greatest increase in seatbelt use.

Onion Lake won, with a 28.2 per cent increase.

Sweetgrass saw an 8.9 per cent increase.

There were not enough observations to determine a result for the Thunderchild.

SGI Manager of Traffic Safety Promotion Shannon Ell says this challenge was so successful, SGI plans to run it again next year.
