A caribou-expert based in the North says there’s likely nothing to worry about from a herd of diseased bison in the Northwest Territories.

Recently, officials in the Northwest Territories announced they would be culling a herd of Hook Lake bison that had contracted Bovine Tuberculosis.

The animals contracted the illness last year and it was hoped they could be saved. However, it’s been decided the bison will go down in March.

Tim Trottier, a wildlife ecologist, says northern caribou likely wouldn’t encounter the animals at all.

122 animals in all are to be put down.
