Over 40 chiefs, mayors and Metis leaders have taken up an invitation to discuss nuclear waste disposal and storage this week in Beauval.

The gathering is part of a series of meetings hosted by the Nuclear Waste Management Organization, which plans to gather opinions from Canadians and make a recommendation to Parliament next year.

Ile-a-la-Crosse Metis leader Don Favel says even though there’s currently no nuclear waste disposal taking place in the North, it’s best to be educated in case a proposal is made down the road.

Northern Saskatchewan was chosen as one of the sites for the consultation meetings because of the extent of uranium mining development in the region.
