Not Enough Census Data About Native Women: Jacobs

The president of the Native Women’s Association of Canada says she wishes last year’s census had done a better job of counting the number of Aboriginal women who have moved to the cities.

Bev Jacobs says it’s hard to get a reading of how many women need help with the transition, and to determine how they’re getting by.

Jacobs says many Native women are forced into the inner city, where they can face a number of social and economic challenges.

She also hopes the recently released census numbers prompt the federal government to address the question of how to deal with real matrimonial property on reserves.

Jacobs says very few Aboriginal women have places to go when problems occur in their marriage or relationship.
